This book analyses the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), one of Europe’s most successful and influential political parties. The CDU might have been expected to struggle in the circumstances of a more diverse, secular reunified Germany, yet it has prospered to an extent almost unparalleled in western Europe. Chapters consider the CDU’s policies (the factors driving them, their variation across Germany, the relationship to women, and the welfare state), its organisational development and change, and its position within the party system. Contributors particularly emphasise the diversity of the CDU, and the way it varies across Germany’s regions. The CDU is compared to other Christian Democratic parties, and special consideration is given to the CDU’s Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU). This book was published as a special issue of German Politics.

The theory of semigroups is a relatively young branch of mathematics, with most of the major results having appeared after the Second World War. This book describes the evolution of (algebraic) semigroup theory from its earliest origins to the establishment of a full-fledged theory. Semigroup theory might be termed `Cold War mathematics' because of the time during which it developed. There were thriving schools on both sides of the Iron Curtain, although the two sides were not always able to communicate with each other, or even gain access to the other's publications. A major theme of this book is the comparison of the approaches to the subject of mathematicians in East and West, and the study of the extent to which contact between the two sides was possible.

Statistical Applications for Environmental Analysis and RiskAssessment guides readers through real-world situations and thebest statistical methods used to determine the nature and extent ofthe problem, evaluate the potential human health and ecologicalrisks, and design and implement remedial systems as necessary.Featuring numerous worked examples using actual data and“ready-made” software scripts, StatisticalApplications for Environmental Analysis and Risk Assessmentalso includes: • Descriptions of basic statistical concepts andprinciples in an informal style that does not presume priorfamiliarity with the subject • Detailed illustrations of statistical applications inthe environmental and related water resources fields usingreal-world data in the contexts that would typically be encounteredby practitioners • Software scripts using the high-powered statisticalsoftware system, R, and supplemented by USEPA’s ProUCL andUSDOE’s VSP software packages, which are all freelyavailable • Coverage of frequent data sample issues such asnon-detects, outliers, skewness, sustained and cyclical trend thathabitually plague environmental data samples • Clear demonstrations of the crucial, but oftenoverlooked, role of statistics in environmental sampling design andsubsequent exposure risk assessment.

This Volume covers the formation of carbon-carbon single-, double- and triple bonds by substitution and addition reactions as well as by various rearrangements. The formation of carbon-carbon multiple bonds by elimination and condensation procedures is fully documented. In addition the synthesis of carbon-hydrogen bonds principally by substitution and addition reactions is featured as is the preparation of a wide variety of carbon-centred anions, cations and radicals.
