What a bizarre title. But it is interesting isn't it? Doesn't it make you ask, "What could this be all about"? Well the truth is it's not about dogs at all; it's about leadership and honesty. Nevertheless dogs are a useful metaphor. You see, dogs are the closest thing we can find when searching for examples of uncompromising honesty. Dishonesty is not part of their DNA. In contrast, the problem for many leaders today is that at some level "most people lie". This may seem like a provocative statement but it's true, even though most of the time we do not even know we are doing it. Some, including many renowned psychologists, would even say that at some level we need to lie to survive. Do we? In a world of business, sports and political Watergates and scandals that has even culminated in Papal resignations against a background of "vatileaks", we seem to suffer from a paradoxical scenario. We find ourselves contrasting the lack of honesty that brought down many of our business and sporting figures as exemplified by the likes of Madoff, Lance Armstrong and Oscar Pistorius (to name a few), with the apparent total honesty of leaders such as the Dalai Lama, Kofi Anan and even Richard Branson or Steve Jobs. We all know that whilst some leaders command respect, others do not. Some leaders have willing followers, whilst others are followed through coercion. Some may lose their followers, whilst others should never have any. And some allow their egos to block trust, whilst others are dealers in trust. This book is therefore a journey into one of the hottest topics for leaders today - honest leadership. But this is not just another leadership book, or simply a nice story. It is about honest leaders changing the world. Now that's a big claim. But its deserved, because this book sniffs and scratches around the undergrowth searching for the real meaning of honesty and leadership and finishes up helping you uncover your own truth. And with the aid of a remarkably simple idea - the Eight Axioms of Honest Leadership - this book will provide you with the tools and skills to enable you to identify, train and maybe even tame your own leadership approach and help you to become a "top dog".

This book brings together a wide range of topics in leadership ethics and business ethics. It approaches these topics from the perspective of the humanities as well as the social sciences. About half of the book is on leadership and the other half on topics in business ethics. Besides these general areas of research, the book explores how to teach and study ethics in both business ethics and leadership studies. Specifically, it examines issues ranging from the nature of ethical leadership, to studies of authenticity, virtue, and the public and private morality of leaders. In business ethics, the subjects covered span from moral imagination, to casuistry, meaningful work, and workplace ethics. The book includes a section on the importance of liberal arts for studying and teaching ethics in business and professional schools. It concludes with a reflection on the ethical challenges of leaders and followers in a world where some leaders have inverted moral values.

It's the Subtleties that Matter! What is the real difference between competent leader and extraordinary executive? Is it pedigree, experience, intelligence? The answer is yes...and much more. Exceptional leadership hinges on a complex interaction between individual psychology and unique business needs. At the top rung of the ladder, where the dynamics are most complicated, subtle adjustments in style can produce outstanding results. In his new book, The Intangibles of Leadership, Management Psychologist Richard Davis, Ph.D., uncovers patterns in the attributes that truly distinguish those who succeed at the top. What he found was that extraordinary leaders possess certain characteristics that fall between the lines of existing leadership models, yet are fundamental to executive success. Davis explains each of these qualities, the people who exemplify them, how to detect them in others, and most importantly, how to develop the subtle characteristics that will enable them to stand out from the pack. Learn why... It's often better to aim for silver than for gold Playing hard to get attracts people to you It's important to have a slightly inflated view of your abilities Your peripheral vision is so important It's ok to get angry with your team So many extraordinary executives have gone through crises early in their lives

Reclaiming T. E. Lawrence from hype and legend, James J. Schneider offers a startling reexamination of this leader’s critical role in shaping the modern Middle East. Just how did this obscure British junior intelligence officer, unschooled in the art of war, become “Lawrence of Arabia” and inspire a loosely affiliated cluster of desert tribes to band together in an all-or-nothing insurgency against their Turkish overlords? The answers have profound implications for our time as well, as a new generation of revolutionaries pulls pages from Lawrence’s playbook of irregular warfare. Blowing up trains and harassing supply lines with dynamite and audacity, Lawrence drove the mighty armies of the Ottoman Turks to distraction and brought the Arabs to the brink of self-determination. But his success hinged on more than just innovative tactics: As he immersed himself in Arab culture, Lawrence learned that a traditional Western-style hierarchical command structure could not work in a tribal system where warriors lead not only an army but an entire community. Weaving quotations from Lawrence’s own writings with the histories of his greatest campaigns, Schneider shows how this stranger in a strange land evolved over time into the model of the self-reflective, enabling leader who eschews glory for himself but instead seeks to empower his followers. Guerrilla Leader also offers a valuable analysis of Lawrence’s innovative theories of insurgency and their relevance to the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. This exhaustively researched book also provides a detailed account of the Arab revolt, from the stunning assault on the port city of Aqaba to the bloody, Pyrrhic victory at Tafileh, the only set-piece battle Lawrence fought during the Great Arab Revolt. Lawrence emerged from the latter experience physically and mentally drained, incapable of continuing as a military commander, and, Schneider asserts, in the early stages of the post-traumatic stress disorder that would bedevil him for the rest of his life. The author then carries the narrative forward to the final slaughter of the Turks at Tafas and the Arabs’ ultimate victory at Damascus. With insights into Lawrence’s views on discipline, his fear of failure, and his enduring influence on military leadership in the twenty-first century, Guerrilla Leader is a bracingly fresh take on one of the great subjects of the modern era.
